Jaybee Motors helps drives measure up to new Child Seat Law
Banbury Renault dealer Jaybee Motors is encouraging parents to make sure they measure up to the new law on child seats, which came into force on 18 September 2006.
Under the new law, children from the age of three and up to 1.35 metres in height or 12 years old must use a correct child restraint, except in certain circumstances.
"For most children, a child seat or booster will be compulsory and the restraint must be suitable for the child's weight and size," said Sales Manager Steve Wyatt.
"It's the driver of the car carrying the child who is responsible, so parents, grandparents or anyone carrying children need to make sure they measure up," added Steve.
"The restraint must be fitted correctly according to the manufacturer's instructions. Using the ISOFIX system, fitted as standard to all Renault cars, makes this process much easier."
All Renault cars have ISOFIX child restraint mounting points fitted as standard — with as many as six on Espace.
Jaybee Motors has a selection of child safety seats available from the Oxford Road dealership, and staff are able to demonstrate the ISOFIX system of fixed anchorage points for booster cushions and child seats.
"Renault is a leading manufacturer when it comes to safety, and child safety is a major part of our commitment," said Steve.
Renault has eight cars with a maximum five-star safety rating from the independent Euro NCAP safety organisation, more than any other manufacturer. An innovative 'sleep safe' head restraint system, inspired by Formula One safety technology, is also available on Espace and on forthcoming Scenic models. It is designed especially for children aged six to ten and works with a booster seat or cushion.
Previously, a child restraint had to be used by children up to the age of 11 or under 1.5 metres only if it was 'available', but since September 2006 one must be used for children up to 1.35m or 12 years old, unless:
- the child is travelling in a taxi
- there are already two child restraints occupied on the back seat of a car preventing a third being used
- the child is travelling a short distance for reason of unexpected necessity
- seat belts are not available.
In addition, a correct child restraint must be used at all times if the child is travelling in the front seat, while rearward facing restraints may not be used in a seat protected by a front airbag.
Children up to three years old must use a correct child restraint, except if one is not available in a taxi, while children over 1.35 metres tall, or aged 12 and over, must wear a seatbelt if available.
